# doalu places — countries, regions, cities and city districts

The places covered by **[doalu.com](https://doalu.com)**, a where-to-stay guide organised by area: 16,668 rows
(187 countries, 1,888 regions, 7,087 cities, 7,506 districts), each with its page
on doalu.com and its identifiers in Wikidata and GeoNames. Use it as a crosswalk between Wikidata QIDs, GeoNames IDs and
a city → district hierarchy, or to link travellers to the right area guide.

- **File:** [`doalu-places.csv`](doalu-places.csv) (UTF-8, comma-separated) with [`datapackage.json`](datapackage.json)
  (Frictionless).
- **Browse by country:** [countries/](countries/) lists every region, city and district with a link to its guide.

## Columns
| column | meaning |
|---|---|
| `doalu_id` | doalu place id, kept across releases |
| `kind` | `country`, `region`, `city` or `district` |
| `name`, `ascii_name` | the place name, and an ASCII fold of it |
| `country_iso2` | ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 |
| `parent_doalu_id` | the place it sits under on doalu.com (the site's hierarchy, not legal containment) |
| `url` | its guide on doalu.com |
| `wikidata_qid`, `geonames_id` | identifiers to join on |
| `population` | the GeoNames figure for the row's own `geonames_id`, published only where it matches our record; otherwise blank |
| `timezone` | the GeoNames time zone (only with a `geonames_id`) |
| `wikipedia_url` | the English Wikipedia article |

## Caveats
- `wikidata_qid` is **not unique**: where Wikidata has one item for a city and its region or country (Berlin, Tokyo,
Singapore, Oslo…), both rows carry it (104 items appear twice). Join on `doalu_id` for one row per place.
- Population figures come from different years and definitions, so a child can exceed its parent (some districts exceed
their city, some cities their region or country).
- No coordinates or geometry: join `wikidata_qid` (Wikidata P625) or `geonames_id` for those, under their licences.
- Some Romanian names use the cedilla letters ş/ţ instead of ș/ț, as in GeoNames.
