What is the history of Yelets?

Where is Yelets?

The Bystraya Sosna cuts the town. Yelets covers about 70 square kilometres of Lipetsk Oblast, Russia, on a river that runs on to join the Don, and the built ground rises away from the water in a slope that the church towers exaggerate. The Don is the larger name here.

Its tributary gave Yelets a bank, a crossing and the reason a settlement stood on this spot at all.

What is the climate of Yelets?

The Bystraya Sosna ices over. Winter on this open country is long and clear, and the river below Yelets locks up while the Church of the Ascension and the Museum for Local History become the warm stops on any walk through the parish streets. Summer belongs to the bank.

How do you get to Yelets?

Luchok is the station name here. The listed building on that platform is the first thing many visitors see of Yelets, and its survival says as much about what the railway meant to the place as the churches say about the centuries before it. Lipetsk Oblast surrounds the town on every side.

Once inside, the Church of the Ascension is the landmark to steer by, with the Bunin museum, the Museum for Local History and the Grand Prince Church all within the same few streets.
