Data sources & licences

The open datasets behind our place data, boundaries, and maps — GeoNames, Wikidata, OpenStreetMap and others — each with its licence and where we use it.

The destinations, boundaries, and maps on this site are built from several open datasets. We’re grateful to the projects below, and we follow each source’s licence. The short credit in the page footer links here.

Places & geography

GeoNames — place names, population, and the country / region / city hierarchy (CC BY).

Wikidata — place identities and multilingual names (CC0, public domain).

Wikipedia — the presence and reach of articles across language editions is used as a recognition signal in ranking; Wikipedia content is CC BY-SA.

Maps & boundaries

OpenStreetMap — base maps and roads: © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License.

geoBoundaries (CC BY) and Natural Earth (public domain) — country and region administrative boundaries.
