Where to stay in Iskitim
The practical side of choosing where to sleep.
Iskitim is a working town of the Novosibirsk Oblast and the choice reflects that. The centre holds the district administration and most of what a visitor needs, since this is a place of offices and industry rather than sights, and a short walk covers all of it. Older ground lies along the Berd River, where the four original villages stood before the cement plant drew them together into one settlement.
Anyone going on to Novosibirsk wants the northern edge. Most do.
About Iskitim
Cement made this town and still defines it.
What is Iskitim known for?
Limestone and shale found here in 1929 brought a commission, a plant, and then a settlement, and the Chernorechenskii Cement Works remains the main industry alongside a munitions factory. Iskitim is also an administrative centre. It runs Iskitimsky District from outside it, being incorporated separately as a town with district-equal status.
What are the main landmarks in Iskitim?
The most affecting place in Iskitim is in the town cemetery. An area was set aside there in 1994 for those who suffered political repression under the Soviet regime, with a commemorative cross raised over it. The Chernorechenskii Cement Works is the other landmark, in the plainest sense: it is the reason the town exists, and its plant dominates the skyline the way a castle would somewhere older.
What is the history of Iskitim?
Four villages stood on this ground when it was first documented in 1717: Koinovo, Shipunovo, Chernodyrovo, and Vylkovo. Nothing much changed for two centuries. Then in 1929 deposits of limestone and shale were found here, a commission chose the site for a cement plant, and the working settlement of Iskitim was formed in 1933 with the plant built the year after.
City status followed in 1938. The Soviet decades left their own mark, and in 1994 the town set aside ground in its cemetery for the victims of political repression.
Where is Iskitim?
Iskitim stands on the Berd River in the south of Novosibirsk Oblast. The limestone and shale under the town, not the river, are the reason it grew here rather than at any of the other places along the same water, and the plant was sited before the settlement was. Iskitimsky District spreads around it.
Novosibirsk lies north.
What is the climate of Iskitim?
This is southern Siberia, so the year swings hard between a short warm summer and a long, severely cold winter with deep snow cover. Continental extremes are the rule. The Berd River freezes through the cold months, and the working year at the cement plant and in the surrounding farmland is built around a brief season rather than a gradual one.
How do you get to Iskitim?
Novosibirsk is the way in. It lies north of Iskitim and is the regional capital of Novosibirsk Oblast, with the road and rail links that serve the whole south of the region running through it. Iskitim sits on that corridor.
The surrounding villages of Iskitimsky District come into the town rather than the reverse.
