What is Ödemiş known for?

Birgi carries the district's name outward. The village keeps the Birgi Çakırağa Mansion, a house of the kind that draws visitors out of Ödemiş itself and up into the smaller settlements around it. Back in town, the museums take over.

Ödemiş belongs to the interior. The district covers roughly a thousand square kilometres southeast of İzmir, far enough from the coast that the sea plays no part in it and close enough that the city stays the reference point for every distance quoted here. Birgi lies out among the villages.

Between the settlements the ground is worked farmland, and the classical sites of Hypaepa and Dios Hieron occupy much the same country the farms do, which is presumably why they were placed there.

Everything comes in from İzmir. The run out to Ödemiş covers a hundred and thirteen kilometres to the southeast, which puts the district within a comfortable day's reach of the city without making it a suburb of it. The last stretch is rural.

Roads from Ödemiş carry on to Birgi and to the smaller settlements, so a vehicle matters more here than it does closer to İzmir Province's coast.
