What is the history of Sheptytskyi?
Krystynopol came first. The town was founded in 1692 under that name, and the Basilian monastery is the one building that still carries the settlement's older centuries into the present. Wars passed through the district.
A memorial sign in the town commemorates the defeat of Turkish conquerors, a reminder that the country north of Lviv was fought over long before coal was found under it. Then the mines arrived. Chervonohrad was the name the town carried through its mining decades, and the pits drew workers into new streets that dwarfed the old core of Krystynopol.
Monuments followed the growth. A bust of Mykhaylo Hrushevskyy and a monument to Taras Shevchenko were set among those streets, and the room-museum of Taras Horodetskyi keeps a smaller and more local record. The name changed again.
Chervonohrad became Sheptytskyi, and the town serves as the administrative centre of Sheptytskyi Raion in Lviv Oblast, hosting the Sheptytskyi urban hromada, one of Ukraine's hromadas.
