Foothill Ranch keeps its beds beside the offices rather than the houses. What rooms the neighborhood has stand on Towne Centre Drive, in the corporate park that the Oakley headquarters anchors, which suits a visitor whose business is on the Alton Parkway loop. The rest is housing.
For a wider choice, the older half of Lake Forest runs southwest along Bake Parkway toward Interstate 5, and Irvine lies west across the Foothill Transportation Corridor.

What are the main landmarks in Foothill Ranch?
Foothill Ranch has two landmarks of real weight: the Borrego Canyon trailhead on Portola Parkway and the Oakley headquarters on Icon. The trailhead opens the walk into Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, where an oak-shaded canyon floor runs up between grassland slopes toward the sandstone walls of Red Rock Canyon. The headquarters is different work entirely.
Steel beams and oversized rivets, under a grey metallic skin, set it apart from the tile roofs around it. Foothill Ranch Library on Cabriole Way and the courts at Foothill Ranch Community Park fill the streets between.
What is the history of Foothill Ranch?
Foothill Ranch was laid out on a corner of Rancho Cañada de los Alisos, the Mexican land grant made to José Serrano in 1842. Drought broke the cattle herds in the 1860s and the ranch was sold off in parcels; Dwight Whiting took the bulk of it in 1885 and planted eucalyptus across the slopes. Grove and pasture held for a century.
Houses reached the slopes only at the close of the 1980s, Foothill Ranch Elementary School opened in 1994, the last phases were finished in 1996, and in 2000 the voters of Lake Forest brought the community inside the city limits.
