Different trips want different sides. Anyone here for the Kingdom of Kongo material wants the cathedral quarter, while anyone crossing the frontier wants the approach road, and in a town of this scale the two are not far apart. Resort infrastructure is not part of it.

European contact reached a capital that already existed, and the town continued in that role through the centuries that followed. One interruption breaks the line. Civil wars in the seventeenth century emptied Mbanza Kongo for a period, after which the town was reoccupied and resumed its function as the royal seat.
Abolition ended the kingdom in 1915. More than four centuries of capital status, counted from the Portuguese arrival alone, closed with that act, and Mbanza Kongo passed into the administrative role it holds as the seat of Zaire Province. Recognition came a century later.
