Mingachevir is an old ground with a young city. The land by the Kura holds ancient graves, jar-burials of a people who lived here long before, from the age of Caucasian Albania. The modern town is new.
After the last great war a huge dam was built across the river, and a whole city rose beside it to house the workers, some of them German prisoners set to the task. The dam changed the whole region. Its power station lit much of Azerbaijan, and the reservoir behind it, the largest in the Caucasus, watered the dry plains below.
The town grew by industry and water. Factories, mills, and a great rowing course spread along the banks, and Mingachevir became a city of power and sport on the Kura. The old jar-graves still lie in the soil.

Mingachevir has a warm, dry climate. Hot summers and mild winters cross the river plains, tempered a little by the great lake, and the rains fall light in spring and autumn, with dry heat most of the year. Warm winds blow off the plains in summer.
