About Ceilândia

What is Ceilândia known for?

Ceilândia is the most populous of the administrative regions that make up the Federal District, and it grew out of a housing campaign rather than out of any older settlement on the site. The name comes from CEI. Casa do Cantador and Casa da Memória Viva da Ceilândia are among its named institutions.

The Reservatório Elevado de Ceilândia appears on the same list, along with the Museu de Armas da Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal and the Museu de Drogas da Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal.

What are the main landmarks in Ceilândia?

Five named sites are recorded here. Casa do Cantador and Casa da Memória Viva da Ceilândia are the region's own named houses. The Reservatório Elevado de Ceilândia is the infrastructure entry on that list, and the Museu de Armas da Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal and the Museu de Drogas da Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal are the two museums, both belonging to the Distrito Federal rather than to Ceilândia alone.

What is the history of Ceilândia?

The story starts with Brasília. The capital was inaugurated in 1960 as a planned city in the Central Highlands of Brazil, a masterpiece of modernist architecture that UNESCO later listed as a World Heritage Site. Growth came with it.

Ceilândia was originally created as the CEI in 1969, a campaign to combat irregular settlements near Brasília, and the initials of that campaign are what the region is called by. Hélio Prates da Silveira made it official. Ceilândia was created in 1971 under him, which turned a campaign of two years earlier into an administrative region of the Federal District with its own boundaries, its own name and its own place in the Distrito Federal.

The region grew fast. Ceilândia became the most populous of the Federal District's administrative regions, which is a considerable outcome for somewhere that began as a response to housing pressure around a capital barely a decade old at the time. Casa da Memória Viva da Ceilândia carries that name.

A place young enough for its founding to sit within living memory can name a house after exactly that, and Ceilândia was only created in 1971.

Where is Ceilândia?

Four regions border Ceilândia. Brazlândia lies to the north, Taguatinga to the east, and Samambaia and Sol Nascente/Por do Sol to the south, which means Ceilândia is enclosed by other administrative regions of the Federal District on most sides. It covers roughly 230 square kilometres.

That is urban ground within a federal district rather than open country, and the Reservatório Elevado de Ceilândia is the sort of structure that such a place produces.

What is the climate of Ceilândia?

The Central Highlands set the terms. Ceilândia shares the Federal District's position on the Central Highlands of Brazil, where elevation takes the sharpest edge off a tropical southern-hemisphere setting and separates the year by rainfall rather than by temperature. Indoor options exist.

Casa do Cantador, the museums of the Polícia Civil do Distrito Federal and Casa da Memória Viva da Ceilândia are all indoor stops, which makes them the obvious use of an afternoon that has turned hot.

How do you get to Ceilândia?

Brasília is the way in. The capital is an important transportation hub for travel within Brazil, and arrivals to Ceilândia come through the Federal District's centre before moving out to the administrative regions. Taguatinga is the near neighbour.

Anyone moving between administrative regions passes Taguatinga on the eastern side or Samambaia and Sol Nascente/Por do Sol to the south, and Brazlândia lies to the north for journeys heading that way instead.
