Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
The seaward point, where Baron Bliss Light marks the entrance from the Caribbean Sea, holds the rooms with the best air and the shortest walk to the water. Wind comes off the sea all day. A little inland, the blocks along Haulover Creek trade that exposure for the Museum of Belize, the Bliss Institute and Holy Redeemer Cathedral, all of which sit within a few streets of the swing bridge crossings, so a stay there suits anyone who plans to spend the visit on foot.
Both sides are small. Out along the shore the pattern changes again. Old Belize Museum and Cucumber Beach pulls stays away from the wharves and towards sand, and the Philip Goldson Highway runs that way, which makes the beach end the easier base for anyone arriving by road or continuing inland to Belmopan.
The Maritime Museum stays behind in the port. Choosing between them turns on tolerance for the working harbour, since the shipping that makes Belize City the principal port of Belize also makes its centre loud, busy and worth leaving at night. Belize District has quieter beds outside the city, though they cost a journey each way, and the Belize River mouth lies some kilometres off along the same road.

What is the history of Belize City?
Settlement here dates from 1638, on the low ground at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, a distributary of the Belize River that runs out into the Caribbean Sea. The town grew into the capital of British Honduras and into the country's principal port, a double role that fixed both its wealth and its exposure, since everything of consequence was built within reach of the water. Trade ran through the wharves.
The Bliss Institute and Baron Bliss Light both carry the name of a benefactor whose bequest shaped the city's public buildings. October 1961 changed the arrangement. Hurricane Hattie swept ashore and destroyed almost the whole of Belize City, and the damage was severe enough that the government began looking inland for a site beyond the reach of storm surge.
Belmopan was the answer. The capital moved there in 1970, closer to the geographic centre of the country, leaving the coast with the port, the banks and the industry but not the seat of government. Belize City kept its weight regardless.
The Museum of Belize and the Maritime Museum now hold the record of both eras, and Holy Redeemer Cathedral, Old Belize Museum and Cucumber Beach and the working harbour together show a city that rebuilt on the same peninsula rather than abandoning it.
