In the last century Germany took the coast and made Douala the seat of its colony of Kamerun, laying out the quays and the quarter of Bonanjo. Trade built the city. Palm oil, timber, and cocoa moved out through the port, and Douala swelled into the largest town and the trading heart of Cameroon.
