What is the history of Bafoussam?
The grassfields were a land of small kingdoms. Long before the town, the Bamileke people spread over these highlands and built many little chiefdoms, each ruled by its fon from a palace of carved posts and thatch, guarding sacred groves and royal treasures. The chiefs held the land.
The people farmed the rich volcanic soil, herded and traded, and grew famous across Cameroon as shrewd merchants and hard workers. Bafoussam rose as a market. Where the roads of the highlands crossed, a trading town grew among the chiefdoms, and under colonial rule it swelled into the great commercial city of the west.
The market drew the whole region. Traders came from the hills and the plains to its stalls, and Bafoussam became the busy capital of the grassfields, keeping its chiefdoms, its coffee, and its crafts. The old palaces still stand.

Bafoussam lies in the west of Cameroon, high on the volcanic grassfields of the western highlands. The city sits among rolling green hills and old craters at some fifteen hundred metres, where cool wet uplands rise between the forest and the northern plains, ringed by farms and chiefdom lands.
