What are the main landmarks in Janův Důl?

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in Janův Důl is the church of 1716 at the upper end of the village. A private owner later restored its facade. A statue of St Wenceslas and a wayside cross in Kubelíkova street are the village's other monuments.

What is the history of Janův Důl?

Janův Důl is among Liberec's youngest parts. It grew on land bought from eight Liberec burghers, where the estate regent Karel Kristián Platz von Ehrental had the first 30 houses built for Count Jan Václav Gallas, and the settlement took his name as Johannesthal. A year later 32 more homesteads followed on the opposite bank.

Each had a painted house sign, with a lime or ash tree planted between them. In 1716 a small church of St John of Nepomuk and a church school were built at the upper end of the village. After the Battle of Liberec in 1757, fallen soldiers were buried behind the church and a Prussian field hospital was set up here.

On 1 May 1939 Janův Důl was joined to Greater Liberec as its ninth district.

Janův Důl is one of the local parts of Liberec, made up of a single cadastral area, Janův Důl u Liberce, of about 0.35 square kilometres. Its neighbours are Františkov, Jeřáb, Horní Růžodol, Dolní Hanychov and Karlinky. Its first houses stood on the left bank of the brook.
