What is the history of Pilsen?
Pilsen was founded in 1295 as a royal town on the plain of West Bohemia, laid out around a wide market square. The charter set the town. From that planned grid the settlement grew as a trading centre of the Bohemian lands, its merchants prospering along the roads that crossed the region and its Cathedral of St. Bartholomew rising over the square through the medieval centuries.
Brewing remade the town six centuries on. When the burghers pooled their brewing rights and built a common brewery, the pale lager that took the city's name spread outward and made Pilsen the industrial heart of West Bohemia. Through war and change the old square held.
From a royal foundation of 1295, Pilsen grew into the brewing city that gave its name to Pilsener beer and anchors the Plzeň Region.
