Kladno is the coal-and-steel city of Bohemia.
What is Kladno known for?
On the plateau northwest of Prague, it grew from a village into the great mining and ironworking town of the country, and it keeps the old coal-mine museum at Mayrau, a Baroque chateau in its centre, the memory of the razed village of Lidice nearby, and a name as a fierce old hockey town. Old works ring the town. The plateau runs flat around.
What are the main landmarks in Kladno?
The old coal mine at Mayrau is the emblem of Kladno's past. The preserved pit with its headframe and engine houses, kept as a museum of the miners, stands on the edge of the town, the mark of the coal country, above the shafts. A memorial lies nearby.
The village site of Lidice is kept as a field of mourning, its rose garden and statues in place of the razed houses, while the Baroque chateau, the churches, and the mining museum mark the streets of Kladno.
What is the history of Kladno?
Kladno was made by coal and steel. When rich coal was found under the fields in the nineteenth century, mines and great ironworks rose on the plateau, and a village grew into one of the largest industrial towns of Bohemia, its skyline of headframes and furnaces. Coal and iron ran the town.
Miners and steelworkers filled Kladno, and the works of Poldi made steel known across the empire. The war brought a terror to its doorstep. In 1942 the Nazis destroyed the nearby village of Lidice in revenge for the killing of a German ruler, shooting its men and razing every house, a crime that shocked the world.
The village is remembered still. A field of roses and a memorial now stand where Lidice was, kept as a place of mourning, and Kladno went on as a city of steel and, in time, of hockey. The old works still stand on the plateau.

Kladno lies in central Bohemia in Czechia, on a low plateau northwest of Prague. The city stands on the rolling farmland above the Vltava basin, on the coal seams that made its fortune, with fields and old mine works spreading around and the great city of Prague a short way southeast. Flat farmland spreads around.

What is the climate of Kladno?
The weather over Kladno is continental and temperate. Warm summers and cold winters cross the plateau, with rain fairly even through the year and snow in the winter. Grey damp days are common.

How do you get to Kladno?
Kladno lies in central Bohemia, half an hour northwest of Prague. Fast roads and buses run to it from Prague across the plateau, and rail lines link the coal towns. Lanes run out to Lidice nearby.
