Mahatet El Raml takes its name from the Raml Station tram terminus. The quarter grew into the commercial heart of modern Alexandria once the seafront tramway drew shops, cafés and consulates to the blocks behind the harbour, and the excavations at Kom El-Dikka later exposed a Roman theatre beneath the downtown streets. Poets worked here.
Constantine Cavafy kept his flat in these lanes, now the Cavafy Museum.
