Where to stay in Osu
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
Two addresses in Osu pull in opposite directions: the Independence Avenue edge and the shore below Osu Castle. Beds near the avenue sit within reach of the central business district, and the walk west into Accra proper is short enough to do on foot when the heat allows, which suits anyone with meetings there. The Ring Road side is quieter.
Rooms there back onto Labone, trading street noise for a longer trip to the water.

What are the main landmarks in Osu?
Osu Castle holds the southern edge, on the Gulf of Guinea shore, and it is the point at which the neighbourhood's seventeenth-century beginnings are still legible. Ebenezer Presbyterian Church stands inland from it. Between the two the building stock jumps eras without transition, houses from the early twentieth century sharing blocks with modern office towers, so that a walk of ten minutes crosses a hundred years.
Nothing here is uniform.
What is the history of Osu?
Osu's beginnings run to the seventeenth century, when the settlement was established on this part of the West Africa coast. Osu Castle on the shore is what survives of that period at scale. Growth came later and in layers: the early twentieth century left the houses that still line parts of the grid, and the decades after brought the office towers, so that the same street can carry both.
Absorption into central Accra followed, leaving Osu three kilometres east of the central business district rather than apart from it. Locals call it the West End.
Where is Osu?
Ring Road divides Osu from Labone, and the ground runs south from Independence Avenue to the Gulf of Guinea, three kilometres east of central Accra.
