Where to stay in Tsing Yi Town
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
The new towns sit on made ground. Tsing Yi Bay in the northeast was reclaimed in full, and the housing raised over it carries most of what the island has in the way of beds, shops and everyday services. Cheung Fat is one such name.
Cheung Fat Sports Centre marks it, standing among estate blocks that would not exist without the reclamation which closed the old bays. Mun Tsai Tong and Tsing Yi Lagoon are gone as water, and their names attach instead to ground the island's newer housing occupies. The southwest carries less.
Tsing Yi Southwest Sports Centre fixes that end of the island, away from the reclaimed northeast, and anyone wanting distance from the estate blocks tends to look there first. Tsing Yi Sports Ground and Tsing Yi Sports Centre serve the whole island. Rooms are thin across all of it, since Tsing Yi Town covers only 10.69 square kilometres and belongs to Kwai Tsing rather than to any of the visitor quarters of Hong Kong.
Tsuen Wan lies to the north. Basing there instead puts Tsuen Wan Sports Centre and Tsuen Wan West Sports Centre at hand while leaving the island a short move away, which suits a traveller wanting more choice of rooms.

What is Tsing Yi Town known for?
Tsing Yi has been extended along almost all of its natural shore, and the annexation of Nga Ying Chau and Chau Tsai enlarged it further, so the coastline a visitor walks is largely manufactured ground. Three bays went entirely. Tsing Yi Lagoon, Mun Tsai Tong and Tsing Yi Bay in the northeast were reclaimed in full for new towns, which is where the housing of Tsing Yi Town stands.

The island's halls carry its name. Tsing Yi Sports Ground heads the list, with Tsing Yi Sports Centre and Tsing Yi Southwest Sports Centre under the same name and Cheung Fat Sports Centre attached to its estate. Others come from off the island.
Tsuen Wan Sports Centre, Tsuen Wan West Sports Centre, Tai Wo Hau Sports Centre, Lai King Sports Centre, the Osman Ramju Sadick Memorial Sports Centre and Lai Chi Kok Park Sports Centre all take names from beyond the shore, in and past Kwai Tsing.
What is the history of Tsing Yi Town?
The island grew by reclamation. Tsing Yi has been extended drastically along almost all of its natural shore, so the outline on a map bears little relation to what the island was before that work began. Two smaller islands went into it.
Nga Ying Chau, written 牙鷹洲, and Chau Tsai were annexed to Tsing Yi, and both survive as names rather than as separate ground. The bays followed. Reclamation on that scale is rare enough to define a place, and here it accounts for nearly the whole of the present shoreline.
Three of them are gone entirely. Tsing Yi Lagoon, Mun Tsai Tong and Tsing Yi Bay in the northeast were reclaimed completely for new towns, and that is the single change deciding where people on the island live. Housing followed the made ground.
Cheung Fat and the estates around it belong to that phase, as does the run of sports halls the island's record consists of, from Tsing Yi Sports Ground to Tsing Yi Southwest Sports Centre. Records name no founding year for the island. What changed instead is the shape of the coast, reset by reclamation, and the island's standing within Kwai Tsing in the New Territories of Hong Kong.

Tsing Yi is an island. It lies in the New Territories of Hong Kong, northwest of Hong Kong Island and south of Tsuen Wan, and covers 10.69 square kilometres of ground that is mostly reclaimed. Almost none of the shore is natural.
Reclamation ran along nearly the whole coastline and swallowed Tsing Yi Lagoon, Mun Tsai Tong and Tsing Yi Bay, so the island's edges are engineered rather than eroded.
What is the climate of Tsing Yi Town?
Sea air surrounds it. Being an island in the tropics north of the equator gives Tsing Yi Town warm and humid weather for most of the year, with water on every side taking the edge off the hottest spells. Rain is the real season marker.
The reclaimed ground around Tsing Yi Bay is flat and open, which tells in the middle of the day more than any difference between one end of the island and the other.
How do you get to Tsing Yi Town?
Everything comes across water. Tsing Yi Town sits northwest of Hong Kong Island and south of Tsuen Wan, so an approach from either direction ends with a crossing onto the island itself. Tsuen Wan is the nearest name.
Reaching the reclaimed northeast, where Tsing Yi Bay used to be, puts a traveller in the middle of the island's housing, while the southwest end takes a further move on from there.
