Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Tin Shui Wai is a residential new town before it is anything else. Beds are not its business, and a traveller looking for a room finds a planned town of flats rather than a strip of hotels, so the practical question is whether the position works at all. It sits well out.
The town stands 25 kilometres due northwest of Central, the main business area in the territory, which turns any trip into the middle of Hong Kong into a real journey rather than a hop. What the position buys is space. Ping Shan sits next door and Deep Bay lies beyond the reclaimed ground the town was raised on, so a stay here comes with open edges that the dense districts have no room for. Yuen Long District wraps around it.
Anyone basing in Tin Shui Wai is really basing in the northwestern New Territories, with the district's own centres nearer to hand than Central. Sport is the one thing the town holds in quantity. The Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground, the Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai Sports Centre and the Tin Yip Road Artificial Sand Court stand inside the same small town, which suits a stay built around training, or a family that needs somewhere for children to run off an afternoon.
Bed choice stays thin. Most visitors treat Tin Shui Wai as a base for Yuen Long District rather than as a destination, and that is the honest way to read it.

What is the history of Tin Shui Wai?
Tin Shui Wai began as water. The ground it stands on was a gei wai area, written 基圍, where fish ponds worked the low-lying land south of Deep Bay long before anything was built upon it. That landscape was engineered, not wild.
Fish ponds are managed ground, so the site had already been shaped by human hands well before the new town arrived to shape it again. Development came in the 1980s. Tin Shui Wai New Town was raised on land reclaimed from those low-lying areas, the second new town built in Yuen Long District and the eighth in Hong Kong, which places it in the middle of a long building programme rather than at its start.
Ping Shan was already there. The new town went up beside it, so an old settlement and a planned one now stand side by side on the northwestern edge of the New Territories. Distance shaped what followed.

Yuen Long District wraps around the town on the landward side, and Central stands 25 kilometres off.
What is the climate of Tin Shui Wai?
Deep Bay lies just beyond Tin Shui Wai, and the reclaimed low ground between the town and that water gives its air an openness the packed parts of Hong Kong never get. The tropical band does the rest. Warmth carries through most of the year and humidity shapes a walk between the sports centres far more than any temperature reading does.
