What is the history of Manado?
Manado grew as a Christian port at the tip of Sulawesi. The Minahasa people of the highlands came down to trade at the bay, and the Portuguese and then the Dutch built forts here on the spice routes, spreading their faith among the hill folk. The Minahasa turned to the church.
Missions and schools made the land one of the most Christian in the islands, and Manado grew as its port and market. The sea gave the town its later fame. The reefs of Bunaken off the bay became known across the world for their diving, and the deep waters off Sulawesi gave up the coelacanth, a fish thought lost with the dinosaurs.
War also passed this way. In the last century the town was fought over and rebuilt, and it grew into the busy capital of the north, its boulevard rising along the sea. The reefs still draw the divers.
