What is the history of Bushehr?
Bushehr grew as the gate of Persia to the sea. In the eighteenth century Nader Shah chose this spit for a naval base and a port, and the town rose as the chief harbour of the south, where the trade of Persia met the ships of the Gulf. Merchants built tall houses of coral stone.
Persian and foreign traders raised warehouses and homes along the shore, cooled by wind-towers and shaded lanes against the heat. For two centuries the port held the southern trade. Goods for all of Persia, and pilgrims and envoys too, passed through Bushehr on their way to and from the sea.
The Dutch and British kept trading houses here. Their old cemeteries still lie in the town beside the mosques and the coral houses, and the British landed on this coast more than once in war. Then the sea trade shifted to newer ports.
The old quarter still stands by the water. Bushehr keeps its old houses and its harbour on the Gulf.

Bushehr lies on a narrow spit of the Persian Gulf in southwest Iran. The city stretches along the low peninsula between the sea on both sides, on a hot and humid coast of salt flats and shallow water, far from the mountains inland. Flat sea spreads all around.

Bushehr lies on the Persian Gulf coast of southwest Iran, far south of Shiraz. Roads run to it down from Shiraz and along the coast, and an airport and the port link the city, while ferries and ships work the gulf. Bus services thread along the shore to the neighbouring gulf ports.
