Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
A room here is chosen against Nairobi, not against the rest of Kajiado County. Ongata Rongai lies 17 km south of the Nairobi CBD and directly east of the Ngong hills, close enough to the capital that the decision is really about which side of the town you want to wake up on. The distinction is not cosmetic.
Anyone working through Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum, and Nairobi Safari Walk is pointing north, and the northern edge of town saves the worst of the daily run in and back. Rooms there fill first. The western edge answers a different trip.
Ngong Racecourse and Ligi Ndogo Grounds draw their crowds from that side, the hills stand across the whole western sky, and the through traffic thins once the main road is behind you. Height settles the rest of it: 1,731 metres above the sea takes the heat out of the nights, so what a room needs here is a fan at most and a door that shuts against the road. The town carries more beds than anywhere else in Kajiado County, being the county's largest urban centre and the eleventh largest in Kenya, so the choice between the two edges is a real one.

Ongata Rongai has no charter year on record. What stands in place of one is a census: the count of 2019 returned the town as the most populous in Kajiado County and the eleventh largest urban centre in Kenya, which is a documentary founding of a different kind. The name came first.
Administrative shape came after, in the form of Kajiado North, the constituency of Kajiado County that the town belongs to. The landmarks around it carry the eras the town itself does not display. The Karen Blixen Museum keeps a colonial farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong hills, from the decades when this side of the range was held in large estates rather than in town plots.
Independent Kenya wrote the layer after that, when a national culture centre was built to hold the homestead architecture of the country's peoples on one site. Wildlife came under management later still. Giraffe Centre and Nairobi Safari Walk belong to that phase, when the country on Nairobi's southern flank was fenced and opened to visitors, while Ngong Racecourse and Ligi Ndogo Grounds mark the same suburban thickening from the sporting side.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Region absorbed the town without renaming it, so the older name stayed on the map while what stood under it changed from homesteads to shopfronts.

Kajiado County runs south and west from the town into open country, and the 17 km between here and the Nairobi CBD is short enough that the two have grown toward each other along the road rather than staying separate.

Ongata Rongai falls inside the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, so the run counts as suburban rather than intercity, and an hour is a fair allowance for a trip a map makes look like twenty minutes. South and west, the roads carry on into Kajiado County.
