Voi is the answer by default. No other settlement in Taita-Taveta County reaches a size that would put a real choice of rooms anywhere else, so the practical question is not which town but which side of this one. The town suits you if the trip is built around Tsavo East National Park and around early departures, since the park boundary begins north and east of the last streets and the drive in is short.
Voi's stock of rooms is thin. That scarcity is the single most useful thing to know before booking, because a full town here does not push the traveller to a neighbouring one; it pushes them a long way out. The land itself divides the options.
South of the built ground the Sagala Hills lift the country, and the air and the outlook both change with the height, which is the reason to look that way rather than west. West is the Taru Desert. Dry country of that kind carries no settlement worth building a trip around, so the sensible reading treats the desert as scenery passed through and not as ground to sleep on. Kenya's coastal hinterland is thin on towns at this scale, and the county's whole stock of beds sits in one place, which makes Voi both the obvious base and the only one.

What is Voi known for?
The first is Tsavo East National Park, whose ground opens out north and east of the town, so the last street of an ordinary working settlement stops more or less where the bush begins. The second is scale. Nothing else in Taita-Taveta County comes near Voi for size, which leaves the town carrying the county's trade, transport and administration on its own.
Past the last buildings the Taru Desert scrub takes over, and the Sagala Hills break the southern skyline.
What are the main landmarks in Voi?
No monument carries the town's name. The list for Voi runs to no fort, no cathedral and no museum, which leaves Tsavo East National Park to do the work a landmark would otherwise do, its boundary being the one line here that shows on every regional map. The Sagala Hills come second.

What is the history of Voi?
The record puts the founding at 1932. A date that late sets Voi apart from the old settlements of the Kenyan coast, because the town belongs to the colonial administration's map rather than to any older pattern of trade or landholding. Position explains the choice.
Ground at the western limit of the Taru Desert, on the approach to the country that became Tsavo East National Park, lies on the line anything crossing this part of Kenya has to take, and a town put there had its reason built in. Administration moved around the town more than once. Voi answered to the former Coast Province while Kenya was governed in provinces, and it passed to Taita-Taveta County when the county system replaced them.
Neither change moved a wall. What shifted was where the files went and which office a claim had to be argued in, which for the largest town in a thinly settled stretch of country matters more than it sounds. Language followed a double track of its own.
Swahili carries the ordinary business of the street and English the written record, an arrangement that arrived with the colonial period and outlived it by a long way.
Where is Voi?
The Taru Desert sets the western limit. Voi stands on its edge, where dry scrub gives way to the built ground of the town, and the land runs on flat from there until the Sagala Hills rise to the south. Tsavo East National Park holds the country north and east.
The pattern is simple enough: desert on one side, park on the other, hills closing the third.
What is the climate of Voi?
The Taru Desert sets the terms. Dry country on the western side sends Voi long rainless stretches and heat that holds well past sundown, and the flat scrub around the town gives none of it back. The Sagala Hills break the pattern.
Higher ground to the south catches more of what falls, which is why the country immediately around the town reads drier than the county as a whole.
How do you get to Voi?
Approach is overland, and only overland. The gap between the Taru Desert and the higher ground of the Sagala Hills carries the movement between the Kenyan coast and the interior, and Voi sits in that gap rather than off to one side of it. Tsavo East National Park bounds the run north and east.
That geography, rather than any single road or line, is what has kept the town on the way to somewhere since 1932.
