That port lies up the coast to the north, larger and working, and a room there trades the heritage setting for the services of a town built around the deepest natural port on the east coast of Africa. Travel time settles it. Anyone using Nacala as a base gives up part of each day to the journey south, and that trade is worth making only when the island's own rooms are taken, or when the trip is built around Fernão Veloso Bay rather than around the old capital.
The water is the other argument for staying put. Divers and sailors come for the Indian Ocean, and a bed within walking reach of it removes a commute that a mainland base makes unavoidable. Nampula is the region behind both. The island and the port sit inside it, which is why the two are usually planned as one trip rather than as separate destinations, and why the region itself is crossed more often than it is slept in.

That port occupies the south-western indentation of inner Fernão Veloso Bay, deep enough to be the best natural harbour on the east coast of Africa, and the island lies south of it.

The Indian Ocean does the moderating. Air off the water reaches Mozambique Island from every side, which keeps the town's heat from behaving the way it does on the mainland behind Nampula, and the difference shows as soon as the coast is left. The tropics set the calendar.
This is a southern shore, so the hottest part of the year lands in the months a northern visitor files under winter, and the cooler stretch falls around the middle of it.
How do you get to Mozambique?
Most arrivals come through Nacala. The port to the north is the transport point for this stretch of coast, holding the terminal of the Nacala railway, and the run south from it is what brings visitors towards Mozambique Island. The line will not take you.
Nacala railway runs inland towards landlocked Malawi, a direction that leads away from the coast rather than along it, so the last leg south is made on the ground.
