What is Middelburg known for?

Middelburg is the seat of Provincie Zeeland, and the centre inside its star-shaped canal ring stays packed with monuments left over from the city's colonial trading years. Markets still fill the main square. The ornamented former town hall overlooks it, and Vleeshal Middelburg sits beneath.

Zeeuws Museum keeps the provincial collections; Zeeuws Slavernijmonument names the trade that paid for much of that inherited wealth. Church towers do the rest.

What are the main landmarks in Middelburg?

Church towers set the skyline. Nieuwe Kerk, Koorkerk and Oostkerk all stand inside the canal ring, with Engelse Kerk, Gasthuiskerk and the Doopsgezinde Kerk filling out the list. Zeeuws Museum and Vleeshal Middelburg carry the art and the province's collections between them, while Gistpoort still stands as a gate into the heart of the old town.

What is the history of Middelburg?

The colonial centuries left the deepest mark. Middelburg counted among the most important cities in the country while the overseas trade ran at its height, and the monuments standing in the old town were paid for out of that period. Gistpoort dates from the years of walls and gates.

The star-shaped canal ring survives from the same defensive age, and boats and cycleways line it along its whole course. Churches went up across the town through those years: Nieuwe Kerk, Koorkerk, Oostkerk, Engelse Kerk and Gasthuiskerk each carry a piece of the record. Sint-Augustinuskerk and the Doopsgezinde Kerk stand among them.

Administration came later. The municipality in its present form was constituted in 1812, and Middelburg has served since as the seat of Provincie Zeeland, the province whose collections the Zeeuws Museum keeps. Not every part of the record is comfortable.

The Zeeuws Slavernijmonument was raised to name the enslaved people whose labour underwrote the colonial trade the city grew rich on. Emma Monument keeps a different memory. Middelburg stands on Midden-Zeeland, the central peninsula of the province, in the south-western Netherlands, and the municipality covers some 53 square kilometres around it. The land is low. How do you get to Middelburg?

Trains reach Middelburg from across the country, and the pedestrianised streets around the market square begin a short walk from where they set travellers down. Roads cross Midden-Zeeland to reach the city, and drivers usually leave the car outside the canal ring rather than in the lanes inside it. Cycleways follow the water the whole way round.
