What is the history of Eik?
Eik began as country ground east of the town. Its name marks an old oak, and the land lay among the parishes that ringed Tønsberg long before the town reached it. The fields filled slowly.
Eik kirke rose to serve the growing neighbourhood, and the older Slagen kirke nearby kept the medieval parish that had worked this side of the kommune for centuries, so that the suburb grew up between an old church and a new one on the north-eastern flank of Tønsberg.
Where is Eik?
Eik lies on the north-eastern side of Tønsberg, where the streets of the old town give way to housing on the road out toward Slagen kirke and the farmland beyond. The ground here is gentler than the harbour core, set back from the water on the inland approach, and the suburb runs out to meet the fields and woods that ring this corner of Tønsberg kommune. The town centre lies south-west.
