What is Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī known for?

Al Buraymi and Mahdah came across from Ad Dhahirah Region in October 2006 to form it, and As-Sunaynah was then carved out of parts of both to give the new unit a third district. Oman has eleven governorates in all. Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī covers roughly seven thousand four hundred and sixty square kilometres across those three wilayats.

Where is Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī?

Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī is a small governorate by Omani standards, covering something near seven thousand four hundred and sixty square kilometres divided among three wilayats. Al Buraymi is the first. Mahdah is the second, and As-Sunaynah, assembled later from parts of the other two, is the third, which means the governorate's internal map was redrawn once after it was created.

All three answer to Oman. The governorate dates from 2006. Ad Dhahirah Region held this ground before 2006, and the creation of a separate governorate took Al Buraymi and Mahdah out of it without changing anything about the land they cover.

The boundary is administrative. Nothing physical divides Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī from what remained of Ad Dhahirah Region, and the two sit against one another as neighbours inside the same country. Oman counts eleven governorates.

The name of the governorate came from the wilayat of Al Buraymi. Size is the governorate's defining constraint. Seven thousand four hundred and sixty square kilometres shared among Al Buraymi, Mahdah and As-Sunaynah makes for a compact unit, and distances between the three wilayats are short by the standards of Oman.

This governorate is a young arrangement of older places. Al Buraymi and Mahdah existed as wilayats long before October 2006, when they were detached from Ad Dhahirah Region and grouped into a governorate of their own. As-Sunaynah came afterwards.

The third wilayat was assembled out of parts of Al Buraymi and Mahdah, which makes it the one district here whose boundaries were drawn entirely within the life of the governorate itself. Arabic is the language of Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī, spoken across Al Buraymi, Mahdah and As-Sunaynah alike, and used for every level of the wilayat and governorate administration that the 2006 reorganisation put in place. Ad Dhahirah remains the older reference.

Families administered from that region before 2006 saw the office above them change and little else, and the connection back into Ad Dhahirah Region outlasted the new boundary. Oman drew the line. Three wilayats is a small number.

Al Buraymi, Mahdah and As-Sunaynah between them account for the whole of Muḩāfaz̧at al Buraymī, which gives the governorate a simpler internal structure than the larger units of Oman carry. The name belongs to the first of them.
