In the nineteen-thirties General Paulino Santos brought pioneers from the north to open the land, and the town that rose on the bay took his name. The sea made the city rich. The deep waters of Sarangani Bay teemed with tuna, and General Santos grew into the greatest fishing port of the country, its canneries shipping tuna across the world.
A boxer made it famous. From its streets rose Manny Pacquiao, who fought his way to glory in the ring, and the city cheered its son while it grew on fish, fruit, and trade, keeping its port, its bay, and its plain. The fleets still land the catch each day.
