What is the history of Encarnación?
Encarnación grew from a Jesuit mission. In the days of the Jesuit fathers, missions of the order rose across this country, gathering the Guaraní people into great mission towns of stone. The Jesuits built in red stone.
At Trinidad and Jesús nearby they raised grand churches and squares of red sandstone, whose carved ruins still stand as a wonder of the missions, until the order was expelled and the towns fell to ruin. The town rose by the river. On the Paraná a river port grew where boats crossed to Argentina, and Encarnación became the trade town of the south, gathering immigrants from Europe and Asia to its streets.
The old low town was drowned. When a great dam raised the river, the old riverside quarter was flooded, and Encarnación was rebuilt higher with a new waterfront and beaches, keeping its Carnival, its trade, and the mission ruins nearby. The new beaches line the river.
Encarnación keeps its Carnival and its river in the Paraguayan south.
