What is the history of Ciudad del Este?
Ciudad del Este was born of the border. The town rose in the nineteen-fifties as Paraguay pushed east to the Paraná and the Brazilian frontier, and it grew fast on cross-border trade. A bridge bound it to Brazil.
The Friendship Bridge was flung across the river to Foz do Iguaçu, and goods and people poured over the water. Then came the great dam. Paraguay and Brazil raised the huge Itaipú dam on the Paraná above the town, one of the largest in the world, and its power and its wages swelled the city.
The market drew the region. Traders and shoppers came from three countries to the stalls of the border town, and Ciudad del Este grew as the second city of Paraguay, keeping its bridge, its dam, and its trade. The river still turns the turbines.
