Sterlitamak began as a salt port. In the seventeen-hundreds it rose on the river as a landing for the salt trade of the steppe, shipping salt down the Belaya. The Bashkirs had long held this land.
On the steppe below the reef-hills the Bashkir herders had grazed their horses for ages, and the shikhans were holy to them, lone peaks standing over the plain. Chemicals made the modern city. In Soviet days great soda and chemical works were built by the river, and Sterlitamak grew into one of the industrial cities of Bashkortostan.
The reef-hills drew wonder and care. Rising alone from the plain, the ancient shikhans, once reefs in a vanished sea, became famous natural monuments of the steppe, and the town kept its river, its hills, and its works. The shikhans still stand over the plain.
