Komsomolsk-on-Amur was built from nothing. In nineteen thirty-two young volunteers of the Komsomol came by boat up the Amur to a lonely village in the taiga, sent to raise a city and its factories in the wilderness. The first winter was cruel.
They lived in tents and dugouts through the frost, and many died, but they cleared the forest and laid the streets, and a town of timber rose on the riverbank. The city was made for industry. Great works rose on the plain to build aircraft and ships far from any frontier, and Komsomolsk grew into one of the largest cities of the Far East.
War took its sons. The town sent its young men to the front and raised a memorial to those who never came back, and after the war the shipyards and aircraft halls ran on, the railway of the north reached the town, and Komsomolsk kept its river, its forests, and its Soviet streets. The taiga still presses close.
