The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral crowns the district. Rising 87 metres above the Strelka where the Oka meets the Volga, it stands on the former grounds of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, whose preserved Fair Main Building still frames the old trading quarter of Kanavinsky along the left bank. The New Fair Cathedral draws pilgrims.

What is the history of Kanavinsky City District?
The quarter began as Kunavinskaya Sloboda. First named in 1599, this riverside settlement on the left bank of the Oka took on national weight in 1822, when the great Nizhny Novgorod Fair was moved here and made Kanavinsky the trading floor of the whole country. The district itself was formed in 1928.
Merchants built the churches. The Fair set the rhythm.
Where is Kanavinsky City District?
Kanavinsky lies on the low left bank of the Oka, opposite the Nizhny Novgorod upper town. The district runs out along flat ground toward the Strelka, the spit where the Oka empties into the Volga, with the rail approaches, the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, and the Moskovsky railway station spread across the level shore. Bridges cross to the hills.
