Kangalassy, Yakutsk — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Kangalassy is a microdistrict of Yakutsk, set on the Lena above an old coal seam in Sakha.

About Kangalassy

Where to stay in Kangalassy

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Kangalassy sits well out from the core of Yakutsk. Because the microdistrict spreads between the Lena bank, the Kangalassky pit and the fenced ground of the Kangalassy Industrial Park, where you base yourself decides whether your days lean toward the river or toward the works. The road end keeps you near the highway back to Yakutsk.

The water end trades that for the Lena.

About Kangalassy

What are the main landmarks in Kangalassy?

The coal is the marker here. The Kangalassky open-pit deposit, worked into the left bank and long tied to the name Kangalasskiye Kopi, gave the microdistrict both its industry and its old miners' quarter. Newer works stand beside it.

The Kangalassy Industrial Park runs an advanced-development zone whose Sayuri greenhouse complex raises tomatoes over permafrost, and the Lena carries the barge traffic that ties the whole settlement back to Yakutsk.

What is the history of Kangalassy?

Kangalassy grew out of the coal. The seam on the left bank of the Lena drew a mining settlement whose older name, Kangalasskiye Kopi, simply marked the pits, and the place was later drawn into the urban district of Yakutsk rather than kept as a village of its own. Then the state re-cast it.

The Kangalassky ground became an advanced-development territory, and the Sayuri greenhouse complex turned part of the old works toward year-round farming under the far-north cold.

Where is Kangalassy?

The microdistrict covers close to eight square kilometres on the left bank of the Lena, where the built ground of Kangalassy meets the Kangalassky coal pit, the outlying reach of Yakutsk, and permafrost that stays frozen the year round.
