Maykop is compact, and the bed stock follows the grid rather than any single quarter, so the practical question is which landmark sits at the end of the street. Pobedya Street is one answer. The blocks around 33 Pobedya Street residential house leave the civic centre, the National Museum of the Republic of Adygea and everyday shops inside an easy walk, which suits a first visit where the museum is the reason for coming.
That side is busy by day and quiet after it. The Belaya River side trades that for air. Rooms nearer the embankment face the water the town was laid out beside in 1857, and the walk back from dinner runs along the bank instead of through a grid of similar streets.
Either choice keeps the other within reach. Weekends draw people in from the surrounding districts, and a room chosen late in the day can mean a longer walk than the map suggests. Anyone treating Maykop as a base for Adygea beyond the city, with Maykopsky District to the east and south and Giaginsky District to the north, will care more about where the road out begins than about the view from the window.

The town dates from 1857. That founding puts Maykop among the newer places of its region, a settlement laid out on the right bank of the Belaya River rather than one that accumulated slowly around an older core. The Maikop kurgan complicates that reading.
A burial mound stands within the same city limits, older than every street laid over the ground around it, which is why the name attaches to the mound as firmly as it does to the town. Administration shaped the rest. Maykop is the capital of Adygea and is administratively and municipally independent of Maykopsky District, the district that surrounds it on the east and south.
Respublika Adygeya is the formal name of the republic it heads. Giaginsky District lies north. Belorechensky District of Krasnodar Krai closes the western side, which is where the republic gives way to the krai and to the wider Russia beyond it.
City and district are counted separately. The National Museum of the Republic of Adygea keeps that record, and the Monument of Memory and Unity marks the part of it the city chose to set in stone. Both belong to the same short walk.

Everyone comes in by land. Roads into Maykop come down through Giaginsky District from the north or across from Belorechensky District of Krasnodar Krai in the west, and both meet the Belaya River before they meet the centre. Maykopsky District covers the other two sides.
Arriving from the east or the south means crossing it first, since the city is independent of the district that rings it and nothing of the drive in counts as Maykop until the last few streets.
