Where to stay in Abakan
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
The museum end is the safe bet. Rooms within walking reach of the Khakass National Museum of Local Lore put a visitor among the administrative streets of Khakassia, close to Памятник «Воинская Слава» and to the ordinary shops and cafés that a republic capital keeps for its own people rather than for tourists. That is a compact area.
Abakan covers 112 square kilometres in total, but the share of it a short stay ever uses is a walk of twenty minutes end to end, and choosing between two central addresses rarely changes a day. Sport moves the answer elsewhere. When something is on at the Абаканский спорткомплекс the beds nearest it go first, and anyone who has come for a fixture is better placed there than in the museum quarter, however short the distance between them looks on paper.
Water is the third option. The Abakan River joins the Yenisei at the city's margin, and staying towards that meeting puts the Minusinsk Depression in view in a way no central street manages, at the cost of a longer walk back in the evening. You want the centre for a first visit, the river for a second.
About Abakan
Two rivers and a museum.
What is Abakan known for?
The Khakass National Museum of Local Lore keeps the record of the republic it serves, and that collection is the reason most travellers step inside Abakan rather than treat it as a name passed on the way to somewhere else. Ағбан is the Khakas form. The Абаканский спорткомплекс draws the crowds a capital needs, while Памятник «Воинская Слава» holds the war years in the middle of the city.
What are the main landmarks in Abakan?
Five names cover the city. The Khakass National Museum of Local Lore is the one a traveller plans around, while Памятник «Воинская Слава» and the Братская могила Советских воинов together mark the war dead of Khakassia in the plainest terms a Soviet-era city knew how to use. Хакаслес supplies the fourth. Its administration building survives as a listed piece of twentieth-century Abakan, and the Абаканский спорткомплекс completes a short list weighted towards use rather than towards display.
What is the history of Abakan?
The record begins around 1800. What grew at the confluence of the Yenisei and the Abakan River was a settlement of the Minusinsk Depression long before it was anybody's capital, and the Khakas name Ағбан carries that older layer forward into the Russian one. Khakassia came later.
The city took the administrative role that made it the seat of a republic, and the shape of Abakan since then has been the shape of a place built to hold offices, institutions and a museum. The twentieth century did most of the building. Хакаслес left its administration block, the Абаканский спорткомплекс gave the city a hall large enough for the whole of Khakassia to gather in, and the war years left two markers that stand a short distance apart. Памятник «Воинская Слава» is the formal one. The Братская могила Советских воинов is the other, a common grave for soldiers who died of their wounds in the hospitals of the Great Patriotic War, and it is the more affecting of the two precisely because it commemorates nothing but the dying.
Abakan reads as a Soviet capital with an older river town underneath, spread now across 112 square kilometres of the depression floor, and the Khakass National Museum of Local Lore is where the two layers are set out side by side for anyone who wants to see the join.
Where is Abakan?
Abakan occupies a basin floor. The city lies in the central part of the Minusinsk Depression, at the point where the Abakan River gives itself up to the Yenisei, and the flatness of that ground explains why 112 square kilometres of municipal territory read as a low, wide grid rather than as anything climbing. Khakassia rises around it.
Beyond the depression the republic turns to higher country, and the temperate band this far inside Russia gives the city a continental year with none of a coast's moderation.
What is the climate of Abakan?
The Minusinsk Depression makes its own weather. A basin sheltered by the higher ground of Khakassia holds still air, which sharpens both ends of the year and gives the city summers warmer than its position deep inside Russia would suggest. The Yenisei tempers little.
Winter here is a matter of dry cold rather than wind off water, and the sensible plan is to keep the Khakass National Museum of Local Lore in reserve for the day the weather turns.
How do you get to Abakan?
Being a capital does the work. Abakan is the point every road in Khakassia is measured from, which means arrival from within the republic is straightforward and arrival from outside it means crossing a good deal of the Minusinsk Depression first. The rivers came earlier.
Traffic followed the Yenisei and the Abakan River long before it followed asphalt, and a traveller who reaches the confluence has reached the city, since the Абаканский спорткомплекс and the Khakass National Museum of Local Lore both sit within the grid just inland of it.
