What is the history of Saransk?
Saransk began as a frontier fort. Built long ago on a line of forts that guarded Russia's edge against raiders from the steppe, it rose in the land of the Mordvins, an old Finno-Ugric people of forest and field. The Mordvins were here first.
The Erzya and Moksha had farmed and hunted these woods for ages, keeping their own tongues and gods, and the Russian town grew up among their villages. Saransk stayed a quiet country town. For centuries it was a small place of markets and churches on the black earth, once thrown open to the rebel Pugachev as he swept through, but far from the great affairs of the land.
In our own age it became a capital. Made the seat of the Mordvin republic, Saransk was rebuilt with a huge cathedral, museums, and a stadium for the world's football, and it grew into a tidy modern city, keeping its Mordvin art, its churches, and its black-earth plains. The bells still ring over the square.
