What is the history of Dammam?
Dammam grew from a small fishing and pearling settlement on the Persian Gulf into the great port of the Eastern Province. Its rise turns on the coast. Traced to a founding around 1922, the town on the gulf shore was still a modest harbour when the discovery of oil in the surrounding desert of Saudi Arabia transformed the whole coast and pulled Dammam into the front rank of the kingdom's cities.

The city spread into the core of Greater Dammam, joining with the neighbouring governorates of Khobar and Qatif along the coast. From the city the coast and the desert routes of Greater Dammam spread out around it, and much of the traffic into the Eastern Province passes first through Dammam.
