What is the history of Berbera?
Cargo came to Berbera before anything else did. From the thirteenth century to the nineteenth, Berbera served as a major port for the Ifat, Adal and Isaaq sultanates, and goods moving between the interior and the sea crossed this waterfront across some six hundred years. Sultanates changed; the anchorage did not.
Each of those powers used the same shelter, and the fortunes of the town rose and fell with the seasons of that long-distance trade rather than with anything grown on the ground behind it. The British era moved the centre of gravity inland. Berbera was the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate before that role passed to Hargeisa, and the administrative move left the coastal town with its harbour and without its offices.
The port stayed the point of the place. Ships still work the quays of Sahil, Berbera remains the main sea port of Somaliland, and the road out of the harbour covers roughly 160 km to Hargeisa at the other end. Beaches did the rest.
Bathaale and Batalaale gave the town a second name, Beach City, and golden sand brings swimmers to a shore that spent most of its recorded life loading cargo.
