Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Tha Taphao is the default. The tambon the municipality covers whole carries the market, the Military Youth Monument and the Chumphon National Museum, and a room in those blocks puts the boats and the buses inside a short walk. It suits you if you are moving on early.
Tha Taphao holds the rooms. Bang Mak, Wang Phai and the other tambon that the town reaches into hold the quieter fringe, where plots widen and the traffic thins out toward the farmland. The airport pulls the other way.
Rooms out toward Pathio District and Chumphon Airport suit anyone flying early or driving straight on, and they trade the market streets for a run down the coast road instead. Beds thin out fast there. Khao Sam Kaeo and the ground around it stay rural, so a stay on that side means a vehicle and an eye on the time, with nothing much open once the light goes.
Chumphon Province keeps its stock small, and Tha Taphao carries almost all of it, which is why the centre fills first when the boats to the islands are running.

The Military Youth Monument stands in Chumphon as the town's own memorial, and it is the piece of the past that the streets keep in plain view rather than in a display case. Chumphon Airport opened out in Pathio District, and it changed the town's standing more than anything since the road, since Bangkok lies hundreds of kilometres north of here. Tha Taphao still holds the centre.
