Rooms on the bank put the Mekong River outside the window at dusk, which is the one thing Mukdahan offers that the inland Isaan towns cannot. Inland the town flattens out. The government detached the district and constituted Mukdahan Province, the 73rd in the kingdom's sequence, and gave the riverside town its seat. Thailand's provincial map was nearly complete by then, and Mukdahan was one of the last pieces added to it. Local administration dates from that year.
Names record the change. มุกดาหาร is the Thai form of the town's name, and เทศบาลเมืองมุกดาหาร is the municipality registered under it. Distance is the other half of the story, because Bangkok lies 645 km off to the south-west and Mukdahan stands at the northeastern end of that road with the Mekong River along its eastern flank. Isaan is the region it belongs to, and the province and its capital carry the same word, a sign of how completely the 1982 settlement was built around one town on the bank.
