What stands instead is Phra Pathommachedi, a monument whose claim to be the tallest stupa in the world has fixed Nakhon Pathom's identity more firmly than any founding date could, and the settlement is read through it rather than through documents. Chulaprathon Chedi belongs to the same religious ground.
Its name marks a second chedi within the city, and the Phra Pathommachedi National Museum exists to hold what the ground around both of them has given up over the years. A different tradition took root here later. Wat Song Thammakanlayani, written วัดทรงธรรมกัลยาณี, is Thailand's only Bhikkhuni temple, and its openness to women arriving from abroad has made a provincial capital of modest size a destination for visitors who would otherwise have no reason to leave the capital.
Bangkok did not absorb it. Nakhon Pathom sits inside the Bangkok Metropolitan Area on paper, yet the fifty-six kilometres between the two have been enough to leave the town its own centre, its own province, and a skyline whose highest point is religious rather than commercial. Changwat Nakhon Pathom keeps the same name as its capital.
Where is Nakhon Pathom?
Flat land, and a spire above it. Nakhon Pathom occupies a compact municipal area on level ground fifty-six kilometres out from Bangkok, far enough that the built-up mass thins between the two and close enough that the metropolitan label still applies. Phra Pathommachedi supplies the only vertical.
Its bulk is visible from the approach roads well before the streets themselves appear, which is the practical geography of a town whose highest ground is a built one.
What is the climate of Nakhon Pathom?
Shade runs short in Nakhon Pathom. The tropical band gives Nakhon Pathom a year in which temperature barely argues and rainfall does all the talking, splitting the calendar into a wet stretch and a dry one rather than into four seasons. Open ground makes it worse.
The plaza around Phra Pathommachedi gives little cover at midday, so the monument is better taken early, and the Phra Pathommachedi National Museum makes a reasonable retreat when the heat wins.

Fifty-six kilometres separate the two centres. Traffic out of Bangkok decides the length of the trip far more than the distance does, and arrivals from the capital converge on the same handful of approaches into the municipal area. Phra Pathommachedi marks the end of it.
The stupa becomes visible before the town does, which makes the last stretch of the journey easy to judge, and the central ring of streets sits directly beneath it.
