Beds in Si Sa Ket cluster in Mueang Nuea and Mueang Tai, the two subdistricts the municipality was built from. Everything else is rim. A room in the northern tambon puts the provincial offices and the through-roads of Mueang Sisaket district inside a short ride, which is most of what a visitor to the Changwat Si Sa Ket seat needs.
Blocks, not districts, are the real unit. Distance settles little in a town this size. South of the old line, Mueang Tai runs out toward the farm roads.
A bed there suits anyone breaking the long haul between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani rather than anyone staying for the town. Past both tambon, the municipality thins. Cham, Nong Khrok, Pho, Phon Kha, and Ya Plong each surrendered a slice of ground when the town was drawn, and those edges keep few beds of their own.
Take the rim only if quiet beats company. Isan farmland starts within a few streets of either tambon. Si Sa Ket does not spread.
Anyone here for the province rather than the town will spend the day out on the roads of Mueang Sisaket district and come back only to sleep.

Si Sa Ket has no founding year on record. What the record does hold is an administrative history, which is the ordinary history of an Isan town that grew into the seat of a province rather than into a fortress or a port. Sisaket and Si Sa Ket are one name in two romanizations.
The province and its central district both carry that name. Mueang, in Thai, marks a seat of authority rather than a mere settlement. The modern municipality is younger than the settlement under it.
Its boundary was drawn to take in Mueang Nuea and Mueang Tai whole, and then to reach further and cut parts of Cham, Nong Khrok, Pho, Phon Kha, and Ya Plong into the same town. Boundaries like that are made, not inherited. Each annexation added farm ground and the households on it to a town that had to hold the offices of Changwat Si Sa Ket.
The Thai name for the place is เทศบาลเมืองศรีสะเกษ: a town municipality, no more and no less. The plain does not make capitals by geography; it makes them by decree, and Si Sa Ket is one of those.
Where is Si Sa Ket?
Si Sa Ket sits on the Isan plain of northeast Thailand, a long way inland from any coast and flat in every direction the roads run. The ground is farmland. Municipal Si Sa Ket covers a compact block of that plain, whole in Mueang Nuea and Mueang Tai and ragged where it bites into Cham, Nong Khrok, Pho, Phon Kha, and Ya Plong.
Mueang Sisaket district holds it all.
What is the climate of Si Sa Ket?
The monsoon runs the year here. Si Sa Ket takes the southwest monsoon through the middle of the year, when the rain arrives in heavy bursts over the Isan plain and the farm ground around the town gets most of its water. The dry months that follow are hot and open, with the plain giving no shade and no sea breeze to soften them.

How do you get to Si Sa Ket?
Trains on the northeastern line between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani call at Si Sa Ket, which puts the town on the main rail spine of Isan rather than at the end of a branch. That line runs through the middle of the town. Road traffic comes the same way, in from Ubon Ratchathani to the east or from Bangkok to the west, along the highways that cross Mueang Sisaket district.
Everything reaches it overland.
