Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Thap Thiang is the whole question. The tambon that the municipality covers entire holds nearly every bed in Trang, and the blocks around Trang church put markets, offices and the bus traffic within a short walk of each other. It suits you if you want to be out on foot after dark.
Rooms are plain and close together. Nothing in the centre is far from anything else, which is the practical case for taking a room there instead of somewhere quieter on the edge of Mueang Trang district. Tung Jang Stadium marks the other side.
Out toward the stadium and the roads that leave for the Andaman coast, the town loosens into wider plots and quieter nights, and a room there suits anyone driving rather than walking. Rooms grow scarce out that way. The stadium crowds come and go with the fixture list, so the streets around it are busy in bursts and empty between them.
The coast itself lies well beyond the municipality, so anyone set on the water treats Trang as a stop on the way rather than as the destination, and books accordingly. Changwat Trang keeps its beds here.

What is Trang known for?
Trang carries the provincial administration for Changwat Trang, and older usage still calls the place Mueang Thap Thiang after the tambon of Thap Thiang that the municipality covers whole. The Andaman coast is not far off, and the town works as the centre for Mueang Trang district rather than as a beach resort. Trang church stands in the centre.
Tung Jang Stadium takes the crowds on match days, and the ordinary business of a provincial seat fills the blocks between it and Trang church.

What is the history of Trang?
Trang has two names. The older one, Mueang Thap Thiang, belongs to the tambon of Thap Thiang that the municipality covers entire, and it survives in local speech long after the provincial name took over on maps and signs. Both names still circulate.
The seat of Changwat Trang settled here because the district around it, Mueang Trang, carried the roads and the market that a provincial capital needs, and the arrangement has held ever since. Distance shaped the place. Bangkok lies a long way north, far enough that the south ran on its own rhythms, and Trang grew as a working centre for its own province rather than as an outpost of the capital.
Trang church marks one strand of that history, a Christian foundation in a town whose ordinary life has run to markets, offices and the roads out to the Andaman coast. Sport came later. Tung Jang Stadium gathers the town for matches, one of the few places where the whole of Mueang Trang district turns up in the same stands on the same afternoon.

Where is Trang?
Trang belongs to the Andaman coast side of the peninsula, and the municipality takes in the whole tambon of Thap Thiang within Mueang Trang district. The ground is low and warm. Trang Province spreads around it, reaching the water at one edge and running well inland at the other, with the town holding the middle where the roads come together.
Bangkok lies far to the north.
What is the climate of Trang?
The Andaman coast decides the year in Trang, running the wet season long and heavy while the town stays warm from one end of it to the other. Rain comes off the sea. Tropical air holds through every month, and the drier stretch brings clearer skies rather than cool ones, so the difference between seasons is measured in cloud and not in temperature.
How do you get to Trang?
The long haul is from Bangkok. Trang sits far down the peninsula, hundreds of kilometres south of Bangkok, so the journey is a long one whichever way it is made. Roads from the Andaman coast and from the inland districts of Changwat Trang converge on the town, which is what made it the seat of the province in the first place.
