Where to stay in Ceyhan

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

The riverside centre is the obvious base. Ceyhan's built-up part gathers along the Ceyhan River, and a room there puts the town's shops and eating places within walking distance while leaving the roads across the Çukurova plain open for the drive out to Sirkeli Höyük in the morning. Kurtpınar pulls in the other direction.

The Karanlık Kapı recorded at Kurtpınar sits away from the centre, and a bed on that side shortens the approach to it, though provision out there is thin and every errand turns back toward the town. Tatarlı Höyük is a similar case. Adana is the fallback for range. The provincial city carries the choice that the largest of Adana Province's outlying districts still cannot match, and Ceyhan then works as a half-day out rather than an overnight, which suits travellers whose interest is the höyüks rather than the town.

Business visitors follow the energy traffic instead and take whatever is closest to the road. It suits you if the mounds of the Çukurova, and not a hotel district, are the point of the trip.

About Ceyhan

Energy moves through here.

What is Ceyhan known for?

Ceyhan works as a transportation point for Middle Eastern and Central Asian oil and natural gas, which gives an otherwise agricultural district on the Çukurova plain a role out of proportion to its size and keeps its name in circulation far from Adana Province. Farming still fills the ground between. Irrigation drawn from the Ceyhan River, dammed upstream at Aslantaş, waters the lower basin around the town.

What are the main landmarks in Ceyhan?

Mounds do most of the work. Sirkeli Höyük and Tatarlı Höyük are the two settlement mounds recorded in the district, and the Tatarlı Höyük Kale Yapısı is listed as the fortified structure standing on the second of them. The Karanlık Kapı is the outlier.

Recorded at Kurtpınar rather than in the town, it completes a short list in which nothing sits conveniently beside anything else, so seeing all four is a driving day across the Çukurova plain.

What is the history of Ceyhan?

Settlement mounds came long before the pipelines. Sirkeli Höyük and Tatarlı Höyük stand in the district as the raised ground that generations of building leaves behind, and the Tatarlı Höyük Kale Yapısı records a fortified structure raised on one of them, which says plainly enough that this crossing of the Çukurova plain was held as well as farmed. Water set the terms afterwards.

The Ceyhan River gave the district its name and its irrigation, and the dam at Aslantaş, built upstream for flood control as much as for the fields, turned an unpredictable river into a managed one across the lower basin around the town. The modern chapter is industrial. Ceyhan became the transportation point where Middle Eastern and Central Asian oil and natural gas reach the coast of Adana Province, and that role, rather than any monument, is what most outsiders now associate with the name.

The Karanlık Kapı at Kurtpınar survives from the older order. Between the höyüks at one end and the terminals at the other, the district's record is a straightforward account of a plain that has always been worth crossing.

Where is Ceyhan?

Flat country runs in every direction. The Ceyhan River flows through the Çukurova plain and past the town that carries its name, and the dam at Aslantaş upstream regulates what reaches the lower basin, which is the ground the district farms. Sirkeli Höyük rises out of that flatness.

Adana lies west across the same plain, and no district of the province outside that city counts more people than Ceyhan.

What is the climate of Ceyhan?

The plain gives no shelter. Open ground across the Çukurova leaves Ceyhan exposed to the full run of a temperate-band summer, and the irrigation drawn from the Ceyhan River below the Aslantaş dam matters precisely because the dry months would otherwise strip the lower basin. Winter is the softer half.

Walking Sirkeli Höyük or Tatarlı Höyük works best outside high summer, when the mounds stand clear and the drive across the plain is not spent hunting for shade.

How do you get to Ceyhan?

Adana is the practical way in for most arrivals to this part of Turkey, and the run east across the Çukurova plain to Ceyhan is straightforward country driving with the river crossing as the marker that the town has begun. Energy traffic uses the same corridor. Sirkeli Höyük, Tatarlı Höyük and the Karanlık Kapı at Kurtpınar all sit off it.

A car is the answer.
