What is the history of Polatlı?
Gordion is where this district's record begins. The ancient city stood on ground that Polatlı now farms, and its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 recognised a site whose importance long predates anything else in the area. Grain grew here throughout.
Whatever authority held the plateau, the value of this ground stayed the same, flat and workable country producing a crop, which is why settlement kept returning to it instead of moving on. The 1921 Battle of the Sakarya fixed the modern memory. Where is Polatlı?
Flat country, and a great deal of it. Polatlı occupies a very large district of Ankara Province at just over eight hundred and fifty metres, plateau ground in North Central Anatolia given over almost entirely to grain. Ankara is eighty kilometres east.
The road to Eskişehir crosses the district westward, so Polatlı sits on a through line between two cities rather than at the end of anything, and Gordion lies on the same open ground.
What is the climate of Polatlı?
Grain sets the terms that matter here. A plateau district at this height delivers the dry summer and the hard winter that a cereal crop is grown around, and nothing in North Central Anatolia interrupts the pattern. No water moderates anything.
The nearest coasts lie well outside the region, so Polatlı takes the full continental swing, with clear hot months for the harvest and cold ones over empty fields.
How do you get to Polatlı?
The Eskişehir road runs straight through. Polatlı stands eighty kilometres out from central Ankara on that route, which makes it a natural break for anyone driving west and an easy day's reach from the city. Nearly everyone reaches Polatlı by road.
Traffic crossing the grain country stops here for Gordion or for the Sakarya memorials before carrying on toward Eskişehir, and the town's position on the through line is what keeps that traffic passing at all.
