The gulf head holds the compact part of İzmit. Streets near the Kocaeli Museum put the ancient ground of Nicomedia, the provincial offices, and the shops within a few blocks of one another, and a room here suits anyone giving a day to the museums rather than the road. The water is close.
Through traffic carries its noise a long way, so a bed one street back stays quieter without costing you the walk. Above the centre the ground rises toward the Sultan Abdülaziz Imperial Lodge, and the lanes below it carry the Selim Sırrı Pasha Mansion, the Saatçi Ali Efendi Konağı Etnografya Müzesi, and the Fransız Kilisesi. The climb is short but steep.
Staying up here trades a flat walk for the older streets, and both the Kocaeli Science Center and the İzmit Earthquake Memorial and Awareness Museum stay within a short ride down. Business beds sit out by the works. Industry lines the shore of the Gulf of İzmit toward Gebze, and rooms there answer to the highway rather than to the town, which suits an early departure west toward Istanbul.

What is the history of İzmit?
The city began as Nicomedia. That ancient foundation stood at the head of the gulf, and the name worn down through the centuries into İzmit still points back to it, while the district around took a different name entirely. Kocaeli came from the Ottoman sanjak.
The Sanjak of Kocaeli governed this shore under the Ottomans, and the province that succeeded it kept that name, which is why capital and province are called by different words. A founding year of 1327 sits in the record. Industry came later and changed the ground.
Works spread along the flat land beside the Gulf of İzmit as road and rail tied the shore to Istanbul, and Gebze grew at the other end of the province into its second large town. Older buildings were kept and repurposed. Where is İzmit?

Kocaeli spreads around it. The province reaches back from the Marmara shore into that higher country, and Gebze is its other large town.
