Sand runs along the Zanzibar Channel with the island of Zanzibar out across the water, and a room on that side trades the historic streets for the sea. Kaole sits close by. The much older Swahili settlement that Bagamoyo grew out of gives a third option for anyone wanting the oldest ground rather than the colonial-era town.
Beds at Kaole are scarce. Distances inside Bagamoyo are short, so the difference between the historic quarter and the shore is a matter of a few minutes rather than a decision that shapes the whole stay. Being the capital of Bagamoyo District means the town keeps the everyday services a longer stay needs, unlike the smaller settlements along the same stretch of Pwani Region coast.
