Hladkivka's own history is that of a small settlement drawn into the growth of Donetsk. The city itself began in 1869, when the Welsh ironmaster John Hughes built a metallurgical works on the steppe and gave his name to the settlement of Yuzovka that grew around it. Coal and steel made the place.
